The Foghorn by Editor, Bernie Scott
Dennis Boy began the March 16th meeting by giving
the invocation. President Bruce announced that Jim Welborne
started the Polio Plus drive by donating $100.00. This has already
started putting the squeeze on Pastor Dave, who has vowed to
match $4,000.00 toward Polio Plus contributions.
The Group Study Exchange needs volunteers and
host families. See Suzy Vance. Bruce Z. passed around a basketball
chart and asked all Rotarians to pick their favorites and return
the forms to him. Don’t forget new member orientation
at Suzy’s house on April 30th at 5:30 PM. Dinner will
be served.
We now have 3 RYLA students. They are Andrew Pomranke,
Michael Wistoff and Eric Daniel. Don’t forget the District
Conference, April 7th –9th.
Maggi Spartz was the “Sarge” for the
day. Guests included Jackie Daniel from the YMCA and Mike Hampel
who volunteers at the Y. Also, Matt Kubik, a proposed new member,
was present. If there are any reservations about Matt, please
contact President Bruce within the next 7 days. Tom Ringo missed
his name spelled backwards in the Foghorn. Well, we don’t
know that for sure, for Tom wasn’t at the meeting. Bob
Rose paid for Pastor Dave. Rhett told about his daughter’s
recent wedding in Nicaragua, to a pediatric dentist. Talk about
trying to find someone like dear old dad!
John Lake paid for making 2 meetings in a row.
He also paid for his son’s 8th grade chess team placing
4th out of 32 teams. Off to state they go! Bob Lindenmeyer paid
for Mike Hampel. Suzy paid for Maggi and her recent talk with
STRIVE students. Pat Boy paid for the nice invocation given
by Dennis. Ed Bednar paid for poor attendance, but blamed it
on the United Way. Ed also said he needs 1040 judges for the
Science Fair. Good luck, Ed.
Bernie Scott told the club that the contract is
in the mail for Richard Elliot, to play at Smooth Jazz at South
Shore, on August 26th at the Guy Foreman Amphitheater. Bryan
Lubeck, who many of you met here at Rotary, will start the show
off at 7:30 PM. Tickets will be available online, and in selected
retail stores in MC and LaPorte. VIP tickets will be limited,
so look for further announcements.
Dr. Houck spoke about Friendship Gardens and told
about the wonderful talent line-up for the summer months. Dr.
Houck is looking for sponsors too! Speaking of talent, Susan
Pound told about her son’s band, whose name refers to
death. Not to worry. Gothic punk is huge this week. On Billboard’s
alternative charts, the top band this week is De Noirrem---which
means what? Ten years ago in was Depeche Mode. I don’t
get it. At the other end of the spectrum, Ed Lysaught said an
Irish prayer.
Micky Gallas won the Queen lottery with # 659,
but only found the 5 of Hearts.
Dennis and Pat Boy announced our guest speaker, Darrell Garbacik,
for a return visit. Darrell is the Director of the MC Parks
and Recreation Department. In the second of a 2-part program,
Daryl spoke about the needed changes at the Washington Park
Zoo. Darrell told the club that the renovation of the Observation
Tower is nearly completed. Darrell also spoke of the unused
greenhouse, and the public cry to do the glorious plantings,
as were done years and years ago. Perhaps the greenhouse will
be used again. Darrell also touched base on the animals, but
then everyone knows that that is what the zoo is for.
Until next week, this is 60 words per minute,
Bernie Scott, signing off.
