The Foghorn by Editor, Bernie Scott
President Bruce began the April 27th meeting by
asking Steve Hornyak for the invocation. Prez then told us that
District Governor John Wendel had the most exciting program
ever. A few chuckles arose from the crowd, seeing that there
was a TV where the podium usually is.
Prez thanked Susan and Rita for Honor the Earth,
and Bob Sheridan and Curt Catterlin for driving the RYLA students.
Prez then thanked all those involved with the GSE. This editor
could not write as fast as Prez talked, so just know that if
you were involved with the GSE team, you were named and thanked.
Prez then tossed out Rotary souvenirs. Rita stood up to claim
her hot dog.
Dennis announced that Bud Ruby would speak at
the Library at 11:30 on Monday, about WWII. The author of Left
for Dead will also be present.
John Wendel presented a film about children of
the dump. This was a very moving documentary about Nicaragua
after Hurricane Mitch. Rotary has delivered medical supplies
and food, but mostly hope. “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty”
is a film about those who have been able to move from the dump
to start new lives, thanks to Father Marco Desi. Those living
in poverty are living in huts in the shantytown that is between
the dump and the septic sewer.
To date, 325 families have been rescued, but there
are still 10’s of thousands of people still living in
this poverty-stricken area, with no fresh running water, sanitation
or electricity. This is certainly a film to see, if you would
like to know where your R.I. dollars are being spent.
Suzy Vance introduced our 2006 Rotary Foundation
Scholarship recipients. This year, the recipients are Sarah
Kanyer from MCHS and Faye Stokes from Marquette High School.
Due to a wonderful bequest from John Schlarb, the Foundation
is now able to give 2 scholarships; one being a 2 year at $2,000
each year, and a 1 year at $2,000.
Terri announced that the Port-a-pit chicken sale
would be on June 2nd at Jewel Food Store parking lot. Ed Lysaught
announced that John Lake was running for Judge. Jim Bell announced
that Dale Engquist had to relinquish his tickets for the Four
Freshmen and needed takers for the free tickets.
Dolly introduced a guest, Bob Roderick who is
her neighbor and friend. Norm Ryding announced that he had a
call from his grandson, telling grandpa that he was going to
be a big brother on November 2nd. Dolly said she is proud of
the scholarship recipients. Dennis paid for Julie wearing Packers
colors. Pat Boy announced Law Day, and that is was just the
day before election day. Jim Bell paid for Faye being his next
door neighbor, and for knowing her since she was a little girl.
Julie paid for not wanting to
support her brother (had to be there for the laugh.) Bernie
announced that tickets go on sale for the Richard Elliot show
on May 5th, and that Smooth Jazz at South Shore is being presented
by Shore Magazine.
Now, to make this easy, and to see if you really
read the Foghorn, the misspelled name is YPEELS DAEH TNEDISERP
ECURB NHAZ.
Until next week, “May the force be with
you, Luke.”
