The Foghorn by Editor, Bernie Scott
The May 4th Rotary meeting started off in its
usual manner, except Susan Pound, who was not the “Sarge,”
collected eyeglass money from everyone. Jon Bausback gave the
invocation. President Bruce, called for Rotary announcements.
Ed Lysaught informed the membership that the STRIVE / Rotary
party would be held may 22nd at Friendship Gardens. ALL Rotarians
and their spouses are invited.
Suzy talked about the Youth Exchange, and that
there is a young man from Germany who would like to come as
an exchange student. John Wendel will host the young man for
3 months, but our club needs 2 or 3 additional host families.
See Suzy!
Table talk with Dale Brown informed us that Stacey
is doing very well and is back to playing tennis. She will start
her first year in college this fall. The Foghorn could be complete
with this great news.
Jim Welborne said that the induction of new officers
would be June 29thth at Creekwood Inn. Be there by 6:00. Jim
also told the club that our club is still accepting money for
the matching funds from Pastor Dave Matevia. This is for Polio
Plus. Suzy has forms for Polio Plus, as well as R.I. Foundation.
Our 3 RYLA students were guests today. Michael
Wisthoff, Andrew Pomranke and Eric Daniel each spoke about their
experience at Camp Tecumseh. The “bug guy” who gave
a presentation especially impressed them. Julie said that what
they really learned was how to identify pests like President
Bruce. High 5 Julie!
The Sergeant-at-arms today was Dolly Marshall.
Dolly fined Prez for wearing the RYLA hat. Guest today was Donna
Wassermann, host parent of our guest speaker. Also, student
guests were Sarah Grams and Joe Nelmar, both seniors at Marquette
High School. Dolly called of the names of birthday babies, including
Rhett, Norm, Tom Swirski and Micky. Dolly then made everyone
stand up and sit down, repeatedly, until someone knew what the
person on the cover of the Rotarian represented. Do you know?
Get out your latest Rotarian magazine for the answer. Here is
a hint---it has to do with body, mind and spirit.
Maggi was auctioning off samples of Hacienda chips
and salsa. Bernie said that tickets for SJSS were going on sale
Friday at noon. VIP seats are $40.00 and lawn seats are $25.00.
Logon to www.smoothjazzatsouthshore.com
to buy. Ed Laysaught said that Jim Bell provided concert going
club members to a 1st class show at the Morris in South Bend.
Steve Hornyak provided transportation to the Four Freshmen show.
Jim Bell and his brother made a donation to Ohio State recently,
but some of the Buckeyes couldn’t get the Michigan connection.
July announced that the Lubeznik Center would
host the first Friday of each month, offering a different and
unusual program. Rod Bensz had ticket # 826, but could only
find the Queen of Spades. What is going on Rod, you have had
2 turns in the past few weeks?
Suzy Vance announced that she had a new-found
friend. At first, this editor thought it was the person who
released “The Family Stone” on DVD, but found it
was our guest speaker, Constantine Bach. A very bright 16-year-old
from Germany, Constantine is a Rotary exchange student, living
in South Bend. He is a senior at South Bend St. Joseph, but
will return next year as a junior at his A school. Constantine
will continue through 13th grade in Germany.
Constantine, speaking flawless English gave a
brilliant presentation on Germany, dividing it into cities and
counties. He told us about the school system and the 3 levels
of schools provided to the children. Children attend either
A school (college prep,) B school (technical,) or C school (basic.)
These levels of education are determined by the 4th grade.
Many Rotarians stayed after the meeting to learn
more about Constantine, Germany and “French” fries.
There is also much to learn about Rotsap Evad Aivetam
Pat Boy will take over next week, as this editor
will be on Xanex, pushing flowers out the door for the mothers
of Michigan City. Did anyone hear Bruce Zahn claim his hot dog
today?
Until next time, may peace be with you all.
