The Foghorn by Editor, Bernie Scott
FYI, Terri Sammann will hunt you down like a mad
dog, if you don’t get your port-a-pit tickets!
The May 18th Rotary meeting began with the gong
of the bell and the voice of Dennis Boy. Dennis asked Jim Welborne
for the invocation. Jim offered the Boy Scout’s prayer.
Nice job! Jim then reminded everyone of the “changing
of the guard” on June 29th at Creekwood Inn. Terri reminded
all that the port-a-pit sale is June 2nd from 2:45 to 8:00 PM.
Sign up to help!
Ed Lysaught was the “Sarge” for the
day, and quickly greeted Joe Goeprich, Jim Dworkin, Bob Shelp,
Pete Shelp and Jeff Jones. Dick Houck reminded everyone about
the plant sale at Friendship Gardens on Saturday and Sunday.
Ron Bensz, a little confused, after numerous people started
shouting at him, told everyone about the Antique Market Auction
from 8-4----but on what date?
John Wendel pulled ticket #872, but the illusive
Queen of Hearts was in hiding. John could only find the 5 of
Spades. Ed said that Dolly and Paul were exempt from fines,
due to their hard work on the STRIVE picnic. Steve is providing
the grill. Dennis, (sinned spelled backwards, but not hot dog
worthy) paid a couple bucks for Jeff Jones and Scott Pelath.
Julie is making tons of cookies, and Tom Keene and Rhett Fagg
are birthday boys.
Larry Middleton recently celebrated 32 years of
marriage and paid 32 bucks. Jeff Jones paid for his daughter
Emily, who recently graduated from William & Mary School
of Law. She is also an MCHS and Purdue grad. Rotary anniversaries
include John White at 30 years and Terri Sammann at 12. Congratulations
in sweating it out! Mike Hackett paid for his daughter and her
8th grade baseball team. Pastor Matevia paid for 10, or was
it 18 years of wedded bliss. Jim Welborne paid for his 91-year-old
mother-in-law. Bernie paid for Smooth Jazz at South Shore, telling
that numerous ticket sales are coming from Ohio.
Purdue University North Central Chancellor, Jim
Dworkin, was our guest speaker today. Jim is a member of the
Valparaiso club, but is the official “district club traveler.”
Jim gave a very impressive talk about the importance
PNC plays in economic development of LaPorte, Porter and Stark
Counties. Jim talked about the ways of bringing in new businesses,
helping communities grow and prosper, creating new jobs and
helping retain jobs. Jim talked about the business opportunities
in the area, with abundant land available. He said that this
area is ripe for development and predicts that businesses will
develop all the way from Westville to the city limits of Michigan
City on U.S. Highway 421, and as far east as Union Mills.
Chancellor Dworkin talked about the new housing
complex directly across from the campus, and that duplex housing
will be an upcoming phase. Jim talked about the new degrees
offered by PNC, and that 50 students are in the MBA program.
Before opening up for questions, Jim briefly talked
about the RDA, which Porter and Lake Counties are already a
part. LaPorte County can join the Regional Development Authority,
but the LaPorte County Council and the Michigan City Common
Council must vote to accept by September 15, 2006. Only these
2 bodies of government can vote, since they have control of
riverboat money. Chancellor Dworkin will facilitate the discussions.
Until next week, yllod llahsram, and may the hot
dog be claimed.
