The Foghorn by Editor, Bernie Scott

As President Bruce is still MIA, Dennis Boy brought the May 25th Rotary meeting to order. In the absence of Ed Merrion, Pastor Norm Ryding provided the club with the invocation.

Ed Lysaught thanked Dr. Houck, Rod Bensz, Ed Beutner, Steve Hornyak, Dolly Marhsall and student, Richard, for all the work that was done at the SRIVE picnic. Mad Dog Sammann, once again, talked about the Port-A-Pit chicken sale on June 2nd. The time is from 2:45 PM until 8:00PM, or until the chicken is sold----which is always early. Suzy has forms for the Paul Harris Fellowship and RI contributions.

Suzy was the “Sarge” and called for Debbie Burke and Ed Bednar to collect fines. District Governor John Wendel told the club that October 13 is the date for the Foundation meeting in South Bend. Bruce Smith thanked all the veterans and asked them to stand for recognition. Wendel also noted that July 25th is Rotary night with the White Sox. It’s White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins. Good seats are limited to the first 1000.

Guest, Jeannie Houck asked husband, Dick Houck, to pay $5.00 for the privilege of having lunch with her at Rotary. Terri paid for her mother’s 90th birthday. Bernie Lootens paid to be back at the club. Julie paid for Grant’s 9th birthday. Jim Bell paid for his son who will travel with him to pick up his other son and only grandson for the holiday.

Ed Lysaught paid for Suzy’s tireless effort. Judy Jankowski (foreign cash accepted please) paid for her Rotary visit from the Roselawn club.

Today’ program was all about STRIVE students and their mentors. Students received cash gifts of achievement. Those gifts had a range from $25.00 to $100.00. Some received Albano certificates. Those Rotarians (and spouses) in the mentoring program include, Debbie Burke, Larry Middleton, Terri Sammann, Ykcim Sallag, Susan Pound, Bryan Protratz, Gerry Jones, Tim Griffin, Joyce Hollingsworth, Rev. Dave Matevia, Rhett Fagg, and Marilyn Fagg. Others include Bruce Smith, Maggi Spartz, Ed Lysaught, Suzy Vance, Steve Hornyak, Dennis Boy, Pat Boy and Ed Merrion. Finishing up the list are Bob Sheridan, Jim Scott, Dave Lawson, Nick Walz, Rita Dagys, Mike Pound and Julie Wozniak. If I forgot any names, please let me know and I will get it in the next issue. Do I smell a hotdog in this paragraph?

Thanks to Pat Boy for covering the news at times of my absence. Pat will cover the news in the next issue, as this editor will be meeting with the owner of the major radio stations in Southwest Michigan, including Cozy 98.3 FM. They are partnering with Smooth Jazz at South Shore and will start a major advertising campaign for us very soon.

Until next time, only one cookie per person. Let’s see if Mike can Hackett (original phrase brought to you by Rod Bensz.)
