FOGHORN
February 21, 2008
CAROLYN SAXTON, EDITOR

President Pat Boy called the meeting to order and asked for Rotary announcements.

Announcements

Suzy Vance reported that STRIVE will meet on Monday February 25 at 5:30 for bowling at City Lanes.  (Editor’s Note:  Bowling has not been one of my strong suits.  I took a bowling class for PE in college and ended up with a D and an average of 33, so this should be a fun activity to watch).  Sandy Smith did not see her name spelled backwards last week and did not collect her winnings.  Your Editor announced that during exhibit change-outs meetings will have to be held in the education space at the Lubeznik Center, rather than the main Hyndman Gallery.  Carolyn apologized for the close quarters, but said she had no other alternative this week since the Green Architecture exhibit was being installed.  Several commented that Rotarians need to get closer and become cozy!

Sarge

Dale Engquist took over as Sarge and reported that he was prepared with a quiz on National Parks, unless members had plenty of announcements.  Although members racked their brains for announcements, Sarge Dale prevailed with his quiz.

Visiting Rotarian, Cindy Hartzell was introduced as well as the following guests:  Lisa Comegys, former member of the Club (guest of Tom Keene); Mario Rosa (guest of Tiny Albertine); Judy Quigley and Judge Bill Boland (guests of Ecnal Renrew); Dan Krouser and Missy Anderson (students from Duneland Lutheran High School); Al and Jean Neal (guests of Dennis Boy); Dawn Pool (guest of Carmen Lynes).

In a turnaround, the visiting judge rose to report that visiting student Dan Krouser was the youngest juror he had to serve on a jury.  Bill Gertner announced that the Judge had performed the marriage ceremony for him and his wife and that Bill had forgotten to bring the marriage license with him to the ceremony.  Sarge Dale gave an eloquent, fawning speech about the Judge then asked to have future automobile violations dismissed.  John Lake was less effusive but complimented the Judge nevertheless.  (Editor’s Note:  Don’t ever pass up the opportunity to be nice to those in the legal system!)

Tom Ringo opened his wallet and contributed a check for $80 to the Rotary Club in honor of his reaching those octogenarian years. He also contributed for the Neals and Judy Quigley.  Tom Keene tossed in a buck in honor of seeing an open wallet from Tom Ringo.

Guest Mario Rosa thanked the Club for the eyeglasses supplied to area students.  Jon Bausback chimed in for the same.  Then Sarge Dale, eyeglass project coordinator for several years, thanked Jon for his efforts in working with children with vision problems.

Jim Bell reported that his wife had gotten tickets to the Oprah Winfrey Show (Editor’s Note:  Although I won’t give the topic of the program that I saw when I was there -- having something to do with procreation and dead spouses -- suffice it to say, it wasn’t one of my great life experiences.)

John Lake and Ed Merrion both reported on their wives “near miss” incidents during the recent snowstorm and the roadway accidents...both very lucky women!  John went on to commend Doc Bruce Smith for taking care of his feisty son’s dental work.  Steve Hornyak also commended Doc Smith for the dental care provided to one of the STRIVE students...hopefully not as feisty!

Suzy Vance had photos of Jim Welborne, Steve Hornyak and Dale Engquist.  Ed Merrion reported that the car raffle had raised $4000 so far with the final drawing on February 29.  Brian Potratz bought at least one ticket in hopes of replacing his car, which recently caught fire.  (Editor’s note:  There was no further explanation of that story, so we we’re all left hanging with mouths open).  Ed moved ahead to report that he will become a grandfather in September and that his son Joseph will start law school in May.

Bernie Scott reported that Rick O’Dell is the honorary chair of Smooth Jazz and that the website for the event will be going worldwide.  Susan LB tossed in a buck for her alma mater, U of I, since others throughout the year had honored their schools.

Dennis Boy was the lucky winner with the ticket to pull the Queen of Hearts for half the pot or one of the jokers for $100.  He drew, neither but there seemed to be some monkey business going on with Dennis giving an envelope (that contained a Queen of Hearts from a different deck) to Sarge Dale.  This deserves some investigation to determine if the contest is rigged.

Program

David Hay was introduced and said he felt “right at home,” since his former office a number of years ago had been on the second floor of the Lubeznik Center.  David now teaches accounting, and prior to that had been with the Lincoln Highway Association in Indiana.

David distributed a map with the Lincoln Highway identified, which is now US 30 and parts of I=80.  A “good roads” movement was established in the early 1900’s by an Indianapolis group headed by Carl Fisher.  The idea was to build a transcontinental roadway from Times Square to Golden Gate Park.  The group was successful in building a roadway 3300 miles long (about 800 miles longer than Rt. 66).  The most historic travel stop in Indiana is in Rolling Prairie and is  called Jenny Rae’s, which formerly was Bob’s Barbeque.

In the Late 1920’s the Lincoln Highway and other named highways were converted to the numbered system.  After Dwight Eisenhower participated in the first convoy of trucks that transversed the roadway from east to west, he understood the need to develop an interstate networked highway system, which he accomplished while President.

For more information and a good read, look for the book Lincoln Highway: the Great American Road Trip by Michael Wallace. The website is www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org.

David concluded by saying that Indiana was the founding member in the development of the current highway system and has become the Crossroads of America.
