FOGHORN
March 20, 2008
CAROLYN SAXTON, EDITOR

Announcements

President Pat Boy called the meeting to order and Ed Lysaught gave an invocation in honor of St. Pat’s Day.  Those with Irish blood coursing through their veins had a light in their eyes and a lilt in their step!

Larry Middleton reminded Rotarians of the importance of donating $100 to the Rotary Foundation’s Every Rotarian Every Year campaign.  Remember, Rotarians, it is up to each of us to support the important projects of the Rotary Foundation, and we need your EREY donation!

Suzy Q...er...Vance picked up her 3 little pig masks to remind everyone that next week’s meeting will be the last one of the month and our green pigs full of change should be brought to that meeting.  Each month, the Rotarian with the most change in his/her pig will win dinner for 2 at one of the local restaurants.  This month’s winner will be announced at the first meeting in April, to allow for the tabulation of coins.

Dolly Marshall announced that applications from 4 students had been approved to attend an upcoming RYLA meeting and that one additional application is pending.

Sandy Smith won a Top Dog certificate for seeing her name spelled backwards in the previous Foghorn

Sarge

Sarge Bryan Potratz recognized various members, who introduced their guests at the meeting:  Dale Engquist introduced Dick Brewe.  Kris Krouse introduced his guest and prospective member Steve Barker (also the speaker for the day).  Suzy Vance introduced her guest and prospective member Idene Goldman, who returned for a second look at the Club after the rambunctious meeting last week.  Lance Werner introduced visiting Rotarian Karen Braddy and guest Keith Harris (website coordinator extraordinaire according to your Foghorn Editor).  Dennis Boy introduced Beverly Welborne (wife of Rotarian Jim), Yolla Espar (wife of Rotarian John, who was absent from the meeting) and Mary Lake (wife of Rotarian John Lake).  Editor’s Note:  what Dennis was trying to do is anyone’s guess since none of these count as points in the membership contest.  Pat Boy introduced her guest, Marc Espar.  There were also two students from Marquette High School, Christine Kolodziejski and Jack Bobillo.

Dick Brewe received kudos from Rotarians Jim Welborne and Ysus Ecnav, as they applauded his previous work on youth projects when he was formerly with the Club.  Rita Dagys announced that PNC has an active Rotaract Club (Editor’s Note:  On my last visit at PNC,  I noticed signage about the Club’s activities.)  Rita also announced that PNC would have its annual alumnae golf outing (not just for alums we assume) on June 23 at Sand Creek Country Club.

Susan Pound led the charge, and others including Dale Engquist, Jim Welborne and Rita Dagys followed in celebrating the University of Illinois.  Jim also celebrated his wife and her alma mater, Marquette.  Dolly Marshall chimed in with her support of Marquette. (Editor’s Note:  I first assumed all this “hoop – la” was about March madness then realized that U of I isn’t in the grid! However Marquette made the grade but alas fell to Stanford in the 2nd round – not that I am in a bracket pool or anything).  Norm Ryding announced that he had seen professional hockey player Tony Esposito play hockey prior to his going pro. (Editor’s Note: Norm, that is great but watch out because those types of comments can age you!)

Rod Bensz thanked all the Rotarians who filled in for him as Sarge while he was away.  Given the outstanding actions of some of those who filled in, Rotarians were willing to pay Rod to keep him from returning.

John Lake announced that three of his children were in the spelling bee.  In true humble fashion, he went on to say that the one child he (rather than his wife) coached was the only one to win—a 3rd place ribbon.

Micky Gallas thanked the Club for their prayers and support during her brother’s recent hospitalization.  She also commended St. Anthony Hospital for their great care and assistance with taking care of paper work.  She reminded everyone to keep some type of medical care information on their person when traveling.

Bruce Smith reported on someone who had bought stock for a certain price only to see the price hit the basement.  It turned out the person could make more from collecting and recycling cans.  Bruce reported that this new way of saving for the future is called a 401 Keg program.

Bryan was intent on quizzing the group on various aspects of Australia, since next month we will have a GSE (Group Study Exchange) visit from Australian participants.  Most tables fell short on the knowledge.  One table, questioning beer or pints of ale, became raucous when their answer was nearly correct but not accepted.  A better head prevailed.  The beer answer was judged correct and no dollar was collected from that table.  (Editor’s Note:  Those Aussies can be a formidable group, and perhaps we have some members with ancestors that were sent there from England years ago!)

Norm Steider held the ticket to try to pull the Queen of hearts for $790 or a joker for $100.  He did neither, so he walked away with the lesser prize of $5.

Program

Steve Barker, from JF New, participated in the GSE exchange with Australia and described several destinations he visited such as a rain forest, the coast, an organic oyster farm, and whales.  He reported that Australia is currently experiencing a 7-year drought   He had slides of what was formerly under water, but is now either farmland or wineries.

Steve was particularly impressed with the Great Barrier Reef but reported on some of the problems facing the area due to global warming.  Steve met various individuals focused on the environment including Geoff Wilson, who is spearheading the green movement in Australia.    Steve’s presentation fit in perfectly with the green architecture exhibit in the Lubeznik Center’s Hyndman Gallery, where our meeting was held.
