FOGHORN
March 27, 2008
CAROLYN SAXTON, EDITOR
Announcements
President Pat Boy called the meeting to order. She reminded participants that the Michigan City spelling bee is scheduled for Thursday April 3, 7:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn. Members of the Rotary team announced they are prepared and ready to win this year.
Suzy Vance announced that the scholarship committee had received a large response to the call for applications. The committee will meet on April 3, 11:30 just prior to the regular Rotary meeting to distribute the applications and pertinent information.
The following individuals have been proposed for membership in the Michigan City Rotary Club by their sponsors: Mike LaBounty (J. Regetz), Attorney Pat Rocchio (J. Espar) St. Anthony CEO Jim Callaghan (S. Pound) Social Worker Ellen Hytken (E. Merrion) and Bill Gertner of Horizon Bank (M. Wright). Contact a board member with adulation or objection.
Sandy Smith reminded Rotarians that their piggy banks were due at this meeting and that the Rotarian collecting the most change will win a dinner for 2 at a local restaurant. Money collected from the porkers will go towards international and local projects. For those of you whose little pigs did not “go to market” but “stayed home” as did the Foghorn Editor’s, you still have more opportunities since this project is ongoing. Remember you and your pig might have “roast beef” and you won’t go crying, “whee whee whee” all the way home if you are the lucky winner in April.
Sarge
Sarge Kris Krouse recognized visiting Rotarians Ralph Caron and Jerry Phelps (Assistant District Governor-Elect) both from the Chesterton Club. Ralph commended the Michigan City Club for hosting the Group Study Exchange from Australia for lunch later in April. Various members introduced their guests at the meeting: Pat Harris introduced prospective member Mike LaBounty’ Maggi Spartz introduced Mike Jankowski; Suzy Vance introduced returning guest and prospective member Idene Goldman and guest Diane Loffman from Georgia. Suzy also had her pooch Bodhi, who participated in the program.
Sarge Kris fined each Rotarian who was not an alumna from St. Joe, and given the response of, “what college?” he probably raised quite a few bucks. Jim Welborne, who is an alum, was spared the fine but tossed in some cash in honor of the school and in thankfulness. His daughter returned from overseas prior to the bombing that occurred in the area where she was located. (Editor’s Note: We join you in your relief, Jim!)
Curt Cipares will be glad when this month is over, since he continually is fined for being the only Rotarian celebrating a birthday in March. However, Suzy Vance (who incidentally saw her name spelled backwards in last weeks Foghorn but has not yet collected her gift certificate for Top Dog) has a son who is celebrating his 44th birthday and Mij Ttocs’s daughter is also celebrating her birthday as Jim announced before leaving early. Bruce Smith announced daughter Isabella’s 4th birthday and the 55th anniversary of B&E Marine.
The update on the pink-skinned granddaughter of Bernie Scott is that the red dye has finally worn away and hopefully the same is true of the tub where she dumped the dye prior to bathing. Norm Ryding had kind words to say about Perry Como and lyrics in one of his songs (Editor’s Note: Norm I keep warning you about these age related comments). Larry Middleton announced that he would be leaving town soon to join his yet-to-be-born grandchild who will be the sibling of a 4 and 1 year old.
Micky Gallas reported that her son has graduated college and has a new job in Chicago. Maggi Spartz announced the celebration of Unity Foundation on April 26. The organization’s plan encourages attendees at the event (or those who want to participate but cannot attend) to contribute to endowment funds established for other organizations and managed by the Foundation. The organizations that receive the most donations for their funds will qualify for a $3000 unrestricted gift from Unity. (Editor’s Note: I could encourage people to give to the Lubeznik Center’s fund at Unity but that might be perceived as tasteless, and far be it from me to be so crass.) Maggi also reported that the Muggles web will cover the trip of the Michigan City coaches when they go overseas.
Even with the continuing announcements, Sarge Kris used his position to impose a quiz on topical subjects. Evidently, many Rotarians don’t read the newspaper because a number of tables had incorrect answers.
Dennis Boy had the winning ticket to pull either the Queen of Hearts for half the pot or one of the jokers for $100. He had neither and so the contest continues. At the next meeting, the Queen will win $823!
Program
Dr. Scott Baldwin, Michigan City Rotarian and local veterinarian presented “New Thoughts For Our Old Friends.” Scott reported that the progress veterinarian method is to focus on wellness, prevention, tailored medicine, family, education, quality of life and a “veterinarian’s oath (although not formal) to “do no harm.” He noted that on a national level, our animals are reflecting the human condition because 75% of the animals in a vet’s practice are overweight. Scott’s practice, however, differs from that statistic in that only 33% of the animals are overweight.
Doc Scott discussed the positive impact of herbal and alternative medicine on animals. Suzy led her dog Bodhi to the front where Scott demonstrated chiropractic care for the animal. Bodhi responded well and walked away with his tail wagging.
