April 10, 2008
CAROLYN SAXTON, EDITOR

Announcements
President Pat Boy called the meeting to order.  Amidst the confusion that Jim Welborne was missing in action for giving the invocation, Norm Ryding stepped in to fill his shoes.  Later Jim Welborne made his donation to the pot for his late arrival.

The following individuals were inducted as members in the Michigan City Rotary Club: Marc Espar, Mike LaBounty, Pat Rocchio, and Bill Gertner.  Absent but approved and ready for induction are: Jim Callaghan and Ellen Hytken.

Pat Boy announced that Albertine “Tiny” Allen had won the Athena Award presented by the Chamber of Commerce.  Pat Harris and Suzy Vance had submitted her nomination.  Past Athena award winners from Rotary include Maggi Spartz, Suzy Vance, and Micky Gallas. Pat Boy was a runner-up this year.

Suzy Vance reported that STRIVE will meet at St. John’s Church on April 21 at 5:30.  Bernie Scott announced that John White is interested in coming to Rotary Club meetings but can no longer drive.  He asked for volunteers who would be willing to help out.

Dennis Boy reported that the Rotary Club meeting next week on April 17 will be at Rag Tops.  Please park in the lot west of the building, NOT the smaller lot to the east that contains restored cars.  President Pat added that the Group Study Exchange Rotarians (GSE) from Australia will be attending that meeting.  Rotarians will be allowed to view the classic cars from the last century after the meeting/lunch.  The following week on April 24, the meeting will be held at the Lubeznik Center, but the gallery exhibit will be changing and under construction.  Rotarians were advised to call the Center to let Carolyn Saxton know of any guests that will be attending so that appropriate seating will be available.

John Regetz distributed membership tallies, noting that the team headed by Curt Cipares is in the lead with Andy Sperling close behind.  Editor’s Note:  It should be noted however, that neither team leader had a guest attend or a member join.  John added that the rules have been changed mid-stream so that points would not be deducted if team members were unsuccessful in finding someone to attend as a guest.  Lance Werner was commended for the slew of guests he has brought and was advised to “close the deal.”  Evidently sales is not the profession of many of our Rotarians who brought guests.

Jim Welborne and Curt Cipares reported on the landscaping needs at the Rotary Castle located in the Michigan City Zoo.  Jim said that Rotarians will be asked to help on May 3 with the gardening needs to make sure the area looks presentable.  Since the clean up date is the Comcast Care Day at the Zoo, Rotarians and other helpers will receive a T-shirt, lite breakfast, and lunch.  Sign up forms were distributed and are due by April 14.  Rotarians were encouraged to wear their “Rotarians At Work” shirts.  If someone needs one, contact Julie Wozniak.

Tom Keene reported that several Rotarians had turned in their checks for the Every Rotarian Every Year campaign, focused on raising $100 from each Rotarian every year to support the Rotary International Foundation.  Tom reminded everyone that there are only a few weeks left in this fiscal year for Rotary Clubs and he encouraged everyone to meet the goal.   Only $1600 has been raised of the $6000 goal.

Sarge

Sarge Norm Steider welcomed Rotarians and fun seekers as he took charge of the group.  Bruce Smith introduced guest Tom Stevenson; Jim Welborne introduced guest Margaret White, visitor for the second week; and Carmen Lynes introduced guest Ken Fisher from South Bend.  Dolly Marshall introduced Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) students:  Jasmine Ashford, Pat Boy mentor; Kim Brown, Tiny Allen, mentor; Matt Melendez, Tom Stokes mentor; Stephanie Wilson, Sandy Smith mentor; and Johnny Hernandez, Lance Werner mentor.  Yllod Llahsram explained that the main objectives of RYLA are to encourage youth leadership and respect for youth, and to recognize high quality service to the community.

Sarge Norm announced birthdays for Rotarians Suzy Vance, Joyce Hollingsworth (who announced she is 50) and “Doc” Houck.  All attended the meeting.  Kris Krouse, and Tiny Allen were evidently out celebrating their birthdays and unable to attend the meeting.  Sarge Norm took umbrage at the Editor’s comment in last week’s Foghorn about his multiple wives and noted that his wife said that she is the only trophy wife he will ever be able to afford.  Other Rotarians celebrating anniversaries are Deb Burke and Jim Neff.  Carmen Lynes announced that her husband celebrated his birthday by attending the Tiger-Red Sox game at Fenway Park.  (Editor’s Note:  Better celebrating his birthday that way than your anniversary.)

Your Editor Carolyn Saxton, announced her great news -- a new grandson born April 9, Max Rader Rickey, weighing in at 7 pounds 8 oz.  Max joins sister Mason, who is 19 months old.  All live in Baltimore with Carolyn’s son, Jay, and his wife Leslie.  Carolyn tossed in $7.50 in honor of Max.  Then she also commended Susan Pound for the referral to the Rotary Home Exchange website.  Carolyn was successful in finding a home in Sonoma, CA which has a wonderful view of the Pacific Ocean and which will be included in the wine package auction item for the Lubeznik Center’s upcoming fundraising event on May 10.  For Susan and for the advertisement of the event, Carolyn gave another $2.50 bringing her gift total to $10.

Ed Merrion raised $143 from Rotarians present at the meeting for programs for the homeless.  Bernie Scott, Pat Boy, Pat Harris and Suzy Vance all honored Tiny for her Athena Award.  Bernie also commended Curt Cipares for his commitment to Rotary.  President Pat honored the new members and RYLA, as did Suzy Vance and Pat Harris.

Bill Gertner reported that he had stopped by the home of Dennis Boy to pick up something since he had missed last week’s meeting. (Was it the pig you picked up, Bill?)  As he was backing, he hit a parked car near the driveway.  As he went in to apologize, he found that the people there were returning from a memorial service.  See what missing a meeting will do to you, Bill?

Dolly Marshall had the winning ticket once again to pull either the Queen of Hearts for half the pot, which was $857 at the start of the meeting.   She walked away with a downtrodden look after pulling the 4 of Diamonds.  With only 20 cards left in the deck, the Queen of Hearts will garner at least $884 if it is drawn next week at Rag Tops.  Rotarians are encouraged to buy more than one blue ticket, to increase their chance to draw the Queen.
