FOGHORN
April 17, 2008
CAROLYN SAXTON, EDITOR

Announcements
President Pat Boy called the meeting to order at Rag Tops Museum, as the Lubeznik Center was filled with the sounds and feet of countless elementary school children.  President Pat reminded members of the upcoming District Conference scheduled for the first week-end in May.  She also reminded everyone to contact Carolyn Saxton about guests for next week’s meeting so that an appropriate number of meals and seats will be available.  President Pat also announced that Micky Gallas had suffered the loss of her father.  After the meeting, we were notified by e-mail that Steve Hornyak was hospitalized for a possible stroke.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.

Dennis Boy announced that Dolly Marshall did not find her name spelled backwards in last week’s Foghorn and will not collect the Top Dog $5 gift certificate.  Dolly’s excuse was that she is not receiving the Foghorn.  Let’s rectify that and see if she will notice it once she has the opportunity to read the edition on her email.  Jim Welborne reported that reservations to work at the Michigan City Zoo on May 3 are not required, but a Comcast t-shirt will not be available without a reservation.  Rotary members will be working around the Rotary Castle and should report there when they arrive.

Terri Sammann reported that Port-A-Pit chicken tickets are available for members—your names are on the ticket envelopes, folks, so there is no flying the coop!  Each member is expected to either sell or purchase 12 tickets for a total of $60.

Suzy Vance reported that STRIVE will meet on Monday, April 21, 5:30 at St. John’s Church.  Pizza will be available, so come on time to grab a hot one!  Although Suzy did not announce it at the meeting, your Editor had planned to do so and was reminded nonetheless to announce that your little piggies are due at this upcoming meeting on April 24.  Remember “Feed the pig and it will feed you!”  Bring your pig full of change to have your total entered into the contest for the fattest pig! There is still the case of the missing pig (or actually pig owner)...Nancy Drew is on the chase!

Dolly Marshall reported that the bus to take RYLA students to Merrillville will leave on Saturday at 5:30 a.m.  She asked for a bleary eyed volunteer to help her out and take some of the students as she will be driving some as well.

Sarge

Sarge Tom Stokes knew the “drill” as he took over to levy his fines.  He fined himself for leaving early in order to fix some problem for someone who had been chewing ice. (Editor’s Note:  Now we have heard it all, Tom.)  Collectors Jim Welborne and Rhett Fagg were both fined for volunteering to collect fines.  Visiting Rotarian, Steve Shirvington, Team leader of the Group Study Exchange from Australia (GSE) was introduced.  Guests (other than the GSE team) were Walter Miller and Angela Koldey from Marquette High School; Mart Huddleston, guest of Tiny Allen; and Margaret White (who was not entered on the guest roster and whom Jim Welborne was trying to sneak in).  Jim said he should probably pay her membership since she was visiting with him so often.

Tiny Allen and Cod Kcuoh threw in a buck in lieu of singing a birthday song in their own honor, and Rotary members were most thankful.  Susan LB reported that it was her brother’s birthday.  Norm Steider was hit up again for his 40th anniversary but begged off the fine since he says he is still paying for it.  (Editor’s Note:  Remember, I have editorial license here.)  Curt Cipares, Kris Krouse and Brian Potratz all celebrated Rotary anniversaries.

Everyone who had filed an extension for their tax returns was fined.  Ed Lysaught was nowhere to be found on this glorious spring day after April 15, although it was rumored he was out on the golf course.

Sarge Tom contributed a story and some cash to tell about his 13-hour trip on American Airlines.  Bernie Scott added his two cents (or perhaps bucks) to relate his problems with airline travels.  Dennis Boy gave a dollar for each of the GSE team members traveling from Australia, and their wonderful Packer-color jerseys.

Tiny Allen, who had given the invocation, must have been praying for more than our lunch since her ticket was pulled for the queen of hearts and $884.  Her prayers were not answered and she pulled the 8 of clubs.

Program

Members of the GSE team from District 9710 in Australia were visitors for lunch and gave a delightful program.  In fact, members were so caught up in their presentation that we stayed well after the 1:15 time we had allotted.  Guests included:  Andrew Casey, Primary Teacher; Cathy Crawford, Vertebrate Pest Management; Matt Crozier, Farm Management; and, Natalie Forrest, Television Journalist.

The team, which is hosted by the Chesterton Club, spent the day and early evening with members from Michigan City Rotary.  We learned a great deal about them, their work and their communities.  They compared their region to that of Indiana noting that the population is about the same although their area is larger; they have 48 Rotary clubs compared to our 48 in the district and they have 1492 Rotarians compared to our district’s 3000.

They have similar crime, although not as often, and have strict gun control laws.  They have serious pest control issues, which are primarily animals such as rabbits, wild dogs and feral pigs.  Other pests include fox, feral goats, mice, feral cats, deer, and feral horses.

Their region is primarily grassland and savannahs, and we were able to view the beautiful landscapes of their region through the slide presentation they shared.  It was most informative and interesting, and we all felt a connection to this visiting exchange team and their country.
