President's Message

Fellow Rotarians,

It is well acknowledged that true leaders are not ones who demand that everyone bows to their will and disregarding all others ideas and efforts. Effective leadership requires an understanding that leaders are actually servants. As Rotarians we understand this. Our motto is, “Service above Self “. The majority of our Rotary Club of Michigan City, Indiana projects are in support of youth. In particular we strive to develop youth leadership. In other words, we want to develop the servant leaders of the next generation. How do we do that? Along with Rotary clubs from across northern Indiana we recognize students with the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, (RYLA). This is not just a shiny medal or little statue. We provide students with leadership training at a weekend long interactive experience where they develop their skills as a leader while having fun and making connections. Next weekend, April 19-21 we are providing this opportunity for six students from Marquette High School and Michigan City High School. Our 2024 RYLA students will be joining us Thursday, April 18 at our Rotary meeting. I urge you to make this meeting a priority to show our club support for these amazing students as we congratulate them as future leaders of America.

What does the student gain from a weekend RYLA experience?
  • Build communication and problem-solving skills
  • Discover strategies for becoming a dynamic leader in your school or community
  • Learn from community leaders, inspirational speakers, and peer mentors
  • Unlock your potential to turn motivation into action
  • Have fun and form lasting friendships
Our 2024 RYLA students will be joining us Thursday, April 18 at our Rotary meeting. I urge you to make this meeting a priority to show our club support for these amazing students as we congratulate them as future leaders of America.

While our deserving students are enjoying their RYLA experience, several of us on our Michigan City Rotary Board of Directors will be attending the Rotary District  6540 Conference.  We too will be attending leadership development presentations with the goal to:
  1. Be Inspired Powerful stories shared by our keynote speakers and Club presentations that show how we are doing good in the world, will inspire you to put service above self.
  2. Get Connected Make or renew friendships that will enrich your life and enhance your involvement in Rotary projects at home and around the world.
  3. Help Celebrate Acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of members and clubs that Create Hope in the World
Together we will continue to serve our local youth and build a club that has an beneficial impact on all the lives in our community.

Yours in service,
Matt
