President's Message

Fellow Rotarians,

There are many facets to the life and work of George Bernard Shaw, (1856-1950). For most of us the only thing we know about  Shaw is that he wrote the play Pygmalion upon which was based the musical and movie My Fair Lady.  He was, among other things, a socialist, an activist, an intellectual, a playwright, an author and a critic.  Not everyone approved of Rotary as its influence spread. Rotary's most outspoken critics in the 1920s and 1930s included Shaw.  "Where is Rotary going? It is going to lunch", Shaw mocked.  Eventually Shaw was won over and even became a contributor to the Rotarian magazine.

Recently I became aware of this statement made by Shaw.  For me it embodies what we truly strive for as Rotarians.  Was he writing about Rotary? If not he certainly expressed our sprit, “Service Above Self.”

“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. Life is no ‘brief candle’ to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for a moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to the future generations.” ~ George Bernard Shaw

I believe the Rotary Club of Michigan City has a moment. Let's hold our torches high!

Yours in Service
Matt Kubik

Join us on  March 7th

Apple Dumpling 101

Let's talk the logistics of our Apple Dumpling reading project.

If you are not familiar with Andy & Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure, or if you need a refresher before we read the book to 3rd-graders, be sure to come to our meeting this week! Matt Kubik will go over everything you need to know to be part of our annual literacy service project. You can also pick up your books at this meeting if you've signed up to read.

Our speaker on February 29th was

Christine (Chris) KostbadeChris Kostbade
Executive Director, Stepping Stone Shelter

"Our mission is to empower individuals and families to live without violence; we promote healthy relationships/community systems, and we provide wrap-around services to help survivors of DV/SA/HT and families rebuild their lives."

The Stepping Stone Shelter provides 24/HR emergency shelter and transitional housing for victims of homelessness due to domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or human trafficking. Stepping Stone is the ONLY 24 hr. domestic violence emergency shelter and transitional housing program serving La Porte County and we are the trusted voice of domestic violence within the community. We are a safe haven for community members fleeing abuse with nowhere to turn. Without Stepping Stone, men, women, and children would stay in abusive environments because they would have nowhere else to turn. We help our clients move forward with necessary resources such as healthcare, housing, legal assistance, educational connections, and more, depending upon their unique needs. We connect persons to resources and ensure that efforts are not duplicated, and community resources are used efficiently. We also operate a second site, the Bridge Transitional Housing. Those survivors who meet referral standards for our transitional housing program can live rent-free for up to 18 months and are not responsible for any utility bills including cable and internet. We provide safe shelter and case management through our own services and collaboration with more than 25 agencies locally, as survivors work toward self-sufficiency. Many of our clients only know how to survive -- we help them learn how to thrive and gain control of their lives and connections to their community. Abusers isolate victims to exert power and control; a connected person is more resilient and able to succeed. High poverty & unemployment rates are key indicators of violence, and Michigan City continues to be above State averages. We provide outreach and education to all ages, with a focus on youth, to work to break the generational cycles of domestic violence that we see so frequently in our programs. This outreach is critical to our mission to empower our community to live violence free.

Thank you for allowing us to come and tell you about our vital programs in this community.

STEPPING STONE TAKE ME HOME

Chris Kostbade gave a fine presentation about the services that she and her Team provide at Stepping Stone for those so well in need.

The following is the poem that was read at our meeting with a copy presented to her from the MC Rotary Club. ( She said she would place the poem on the wall in the Stepping Stone building. )
