President's Message

Shortly after I became president one of our speakers was Trudi Menke whose presentation was “Reframing Leadership”.   During her talk she said that she knew we were committed to “service” but admitted she had no idea what we actually did.  All service clubs do service, What made our Rotary club special. We needed to identify that mission and tell the world.  I don’t think we had considered our club service in that way before. A quick review of our on-going club projects and the answer was evident.  The mission of the Rotary Club of Michigan City is Service to Youth. We do other things but our primary efforts go to benefiting youth. Here is the list:

  • Eyeglasses for those in need
  • Recognition of High School Students of Excellence each month
  • Scholarships
  • Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
  • Apple Dumpling Literacy Project
  • Our Community Salutes, recognition of military recruits

There have been several surprises since I was inducted as president of our Michigan City Rotary Club. One has been the magnitude of the financial assets  entrusted into the hands of the president to be used for good in the community.  These funds – nearly $15,000 annually are provided by our own Rotary Foundation.  Rightly so, the funds can only be used to support youth related service. At our February meeting of the Rotary Board of Directors approved my request to make a $2000 donation to the Michigan City Public Art Committee (MAC).  These funds will be used by MAC to pay for art class fees for those in need of assistance. In this small way we Rotarians are furthering our reach into the community and changing lives. I look forward to inviting students who have received our support to join us for lunch and sharing their art experience.

Yours in Service

Matt Kubik

Our speaker on February 29th is

Christine (Chris) KostbadeChris Kostbade
Executive Director, Stepping Stone Shelter

"Our mission is to empower individuals and families to live without violence; we promote healthy relationships/community systems, and we provide wrap-around services to help survivors of DV/SA/HT and families rebuild their lives."

The Stepping Stone Shelter provides 24/HR emergency shelter and transitional housing for victims of homelessness due to domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or human trafficking. Stepping Stone is the ONLY 24 hr. domestic violence emergency shelter and transitional housing program serving La Porte County and we are the trusted voice of domestic violence within the community. We are a safe haven for community members fleeing abuse with nowhere to turn. Without Stepping Stone, men, women, and children would stay in abusive environments because they would have nowhere else to turn. We help our clients move forward with necessary resources such as healthcare, housing, legal assistance, educational connections, and more, depending upon their unique needs. We connect persons to resources and ensure that efforts are not duplicated, and community resources are used efficiently. We also operate a second site, the Bridge Transitional Housing. Those survivors who meet referral standards for our transitional housing program can live rent-free for up to 18 months and are not responsible for any utility bills including cable and internet. We provide safe shelter and case management through our own services and collaboration with more than 25 agencies locally, as survivors work toward self-sufficiency. Many of our clients only know how to survive -- we help them learn how to thrive and gain control of their lives and connections to their community. Abusers isolate victims to exert power and control; a connected person is more resilient and able to succeed. High poverty & unemployment rates are key indicators of violence, and Michigan City continues to be above State averages. We provide outreach and education to all ages, with a focus on youth, to work to break the generational cycles of domestic violence that we see so frequently in our programs. This outreach is critical to our mission to empower our community to live violence free.

Thank you for allowing us to come and tell you about our vital programs in this community.

CLOSER TO GOD

With Jim Scott sending me his pictures and comments while he was with fellow Rotarians during the week at his recent trip to Oregon for the Adaptive Skiing Event, he gave me inspiration to write a series of poems which made me feel like I was on the ski slopes of Mount Bachelor with the Team. This was the last poem / song that was written and was part of the invocation on 2/22.

I believe i may have seen God last week
but i think i was in heaven
my view has been above the stars
can anybody question?

With the skies so blue as the sun shines through
the pines stand up so tall
the snow packed slopes, my eyes they grope
they break an unknowing fall

But i don't fret about that too much
i'm taking all this in
as God looked down on snowy ground
at me, he smiled, with a grin

So many things that he provides, fortunes cannot buy
leaving Bachelor on that day, visions in the sky
back again i pray next year, to Bachelor i will fly
perhaps a friend who may attend, perhaps he may just try

I believe i may have seen God last week
i climbed the stairs to heaven
my view lies above the stars
    can anybody question?
no need to even question ........

Polio mapping goes high tech

Geotracking ensures fewer children are left behind

When polio vaccinators fanned out across areas of the Republic of Congo last year to stop an outbreak, they carried a powerful new tool in their pockets: cellphones that tracked their progress as they went door to door. Equipped with a mobile app, the phones sent data back to a command center where staff could see on a digital map if homes were missed and redirect teams on the ground.

With support from the World Health Organization and other partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the country is helping pioneer the use of what is known as geospatial tracking to stop polio outbreaks. Instead of relying on hand-drawn maps that are prone to errors, response team leaders can see with pinpoint accuracy where vaccinators have been and which homes they didn’t get to. This happens in real time when a wireless connection is available. Such speed and precision are crucial to ensuring that a vaccine reaches each child and outbreaks are stopped.

“All you have to do is charge your phone and make sure you turn on the tracker when you are out on the streets. I just put it in my pocket and go from house to house,” says Sandrine Lina, one of the WHO-trained vaccinators.

She and others hit the streets in June 2023 with hundreds of the phones after an outbreak of variant poliovirus type 1. The WHO African region was certified free of wild poliovirus in 2020. But this other form of polio, known as vaccine-derived or variant poliovirus, remains a threat. These cases occur in rare instances when the live but weakened virus in oral vaccines circulates long enough through sewage in communities with low vaccination rates to mutate into a potentially dangerous form.
