President's Message

While our focus is on our local Rotary Club of Michigan City all of our full members are also members of Rotary International. We are a global organization committed to “service above self”, For over 100 years we have been making a significant impact in communities around the world. We are part of a network of local clubs through which Rotary has helped countless individuals, supported various causes, and fostered a spirit of humanitarianism. With the core belief that giving back is a fundamental responsibility we engage in projects and initiatives aimed at addressing societal needs and creating positive change.

Historically Rotary has  provided resources, knowledge, and support to tackle various challenges. Around the world  Rotary clubs organize fundraising events to generate funds for community development projects.   - These initiatives include building schools, hospitals, and community centers.

Locally, our club has a long tradition of supporting youth This spring we, as Rotarians have projects that promote leadership, education and literacy through initiatives such as scholarships and literacy programs, Our programs enable individuals to access educational opportunities and enhance their prospects.

Living our ethic of “service above self” means taking action to provide time, talent and resources. Too often we focus on service as dropping a few dollars during a meeting. Money is important but active service is perhaps more important.  I am calling on all Michigan City Rotarians provide active service this spring.  In the next few days you will receive and email requesting your commitment to serve on various club tasks or community service. These are serious requests. An effective club living its mission is not run by a few officers while the rest of the members are passive.

Rotary has transformed countless lives – both those who are served and members themselves. Through our collective efforts of our  members, Rotary will continue to make a meaningful difference in Michigan City. Seeing our service will inspire others to join the movement and contribute to a better world.

Yours in Service,

Matt Kubik

GUIDANCE

Today's presentation, as all have been, was done with excellence! Kudos to Jocelyn Colburn!
Social Work can be very demanding, rewarding and requires many skills to be successful. Often as we know, these folks are placed in very "delicate" positions. I had written my thoughts prior to our meeting today and mentioned this to Jim W. He said to send them his way so here they are. (Jocelyn was provided with a copy before she left today as well.)

Best to all ,,,

GUIDANCE

what would i do, if i didn't know what to do
i guess i wouldn't know
stay frozen in time, not my design
seek help from one, in the know

to help mend broken bones, when some are alone
our pilot to help show us the way
food for the soul, to help our wind blow
close to the bone and not stray

appreciation, your magic fine touch
you help me sleep in my bed
if it wasn't for you, what would i do?
you help me to not turn my head

i relish the fact you won't turn your back
you usher my hope to be free
and if it wasn't for you, where would i be
perhaps drowning in quicksand or sea .....

On February 1st we will hear from

Rotary and UNEP Unite to Safeguard Global Freshwater Ecosystems

'Community Action for Fresh Water' Initiative Aims to Enhance Global Freshwater Through Community-Led Projects

Under a new strategic partnership, Rotary and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are launching the 'Community Action for Fresh Water' initiative, focusing on the protection of freshwater ecosystems. In response to escalating challenges like pollution, climate change, and habitat degradation, this initiative is set to enhance both the conservation and monitoring of freshwater ecosystems globally.

“Partnering with UNEP empowers Rotary members to significantly contribute to freshwater conservation efforts, beginning with the waterways in their own communities,” said Rotary International President Gordon McInally. “Through this collaboration, our members will bring local solutions to global challenges, directly impacting the health and sustainability of their communities.”

Through this initiative, Rotary will leverage its global network to initiate community-based solutions that directly influence freshwater ecosystems and can be carried out at the watershed level. Members will engage in identifying and protecting important local bodies of water, collaborating closely with local stakeholders. Their activities will encompass organizing cleanup and conservation campaigns, conducting educational initiatives on water conservation, participating in habitat restoration, and monitoring water quality.

“Freshwater ecosystems are essential for the well-being of our planet, providing crucial services from biodiversity stability to water supply for communities,” said Leticia Carvalho, Head of UNEP's Marine and Freshwater Branch. “This collaboration amplifies our efforts at the grassroots level, combining Rotary’s community presence with our expertise to make a meaningful impact, and fostering respect for these vital resources.”
